30 Stitches, 30 Threads

Instructors: Stephen & Hollie
Cost: $395
Dates: 11/9 - 11/10
Description: This 2-day class aims to introduce participants to some of the interesting and unusual thread lines sold at Rittenhouse Needlepoint. The threads featured in this class will have "Winter" color palette (loosely interpreted). Threads will include some that can be used on 13m and some for use on 18m as well as several that may be used on either mesh size. We will also be using threads that are strandable and non-strandable. Participants will create a notebook that they can subsequently use for reference. Some of the threads that will be featured include Belle Soie, Facets, Lorikeet, Sanibel, River Silks 7mm ribbon and Wildflowers. We've selected an interesting and unusual mix of stitches as well that includes a couple of Jean Hilton-type doozies, a little Blackwork pattern, an eyelet stitch, a “random” stitch and even something called “Alternating Dimpled Diagonal Variation” – how’s that for a mouthful? I am excited about this one, ladies – sharpen your needles, get your rest, because this one is going to be a challenge. Included: 30 full cards/skeins of thread, stretcher bars, notebook & instructional sheets, instruction.

Poinsettia

Instructors: Stephen & Hollie
Cost: $395
Dates: 12/6 - 12/7
Description: Classic Poinsettia Design & "A Longwood Christmas" 2-day class. This class will be an enjoyable and mostly relaxing stitch. The canvas, a classic poinsettia design , comes on 18 or 13 mesh so you may pick your poison. The stitches will work well on either count. We will be covering most (but not all) of the canvas so those of you with a dislike of exposed canvas should feel quite at home (honestly, I think you will be totally fine). Longwood Gardens, if you have never been, is truly one of the great public gardens of America and well worth a visit at any time of the year. Their Christmas display is not to be missed as you can imagine and we will time our visit to take in the outdoor light show (500,000 lights) as well as the conservatory display with plenty of time for the gift shop – did you think I would forget that? Ah, you don’t know me well if you did.

Orchid Extravaganza

Instructors: Stephen & Hollie
Cost: $495
Dates: 1/24 - 1/25
Description: It’s back to Longwood in January but this time for their orchid display which is also another of their annual traditions taking place during the winter doldrums every year it is absolutely a sight for sore eyes. Our choice of canvas is a Barbara Russell design of a magenta Phalaenopsis or Singapore orchid (https://rittenhouseneedlepoint.com/singapore-orchid.html). This vibrant canvas will give us plenty of opportunity to spread our wings and creatively explore some new techniques employing beads, sequins and lite stitching techniques.

Madame Monet & the Barnes

Instructors: Stephen & Hollie
Cost: $550
Dates: 2/15 - 2/16
Description: The Claude Monet painting of Camille, his wife, doing embroidery very fortuitously for us rests in the collection of Philadelphia’s very own irascible Dr. Barnes. Visit his world-famous collection of impressionist and post-impressionist art (located just a few blocks from Rittenhouse Needlepoint) and stitch Changing Woman Designs’ canvas of this charming and well-composed scene that we all can relate to.

Philadelphia Flower Show, Gauguin & Ribbon Embroidery

Instructors: Stephen & Hollie
Cost: $550
Dates: 3/4 - 3/5
Description: The Philadelphia Flower Show is justly known around the globe as one of the premier horticultural events of the year and it takes place literally across the street from Rittenhouse Needlepoint. This year we have chosen to celebrate the vernal equinox with a canvas based on the artist Paul Gauguin which we will embellish using a variety of ribbon embroidery techniques. Because of our prime location, we can avoid the usual crowds by timing our visit for the later afternoon and early evening (and during the week) which insiders know is the least visited time of the day to experience the show. Your tickets will enable you to re-enter the show should you want to so you needn’t feel pressured to rush. You can balance your visit between stitching and show to suit yourself – flexibility is our middle name here!

Robert is designing for us a special project utilizing a design from the Barbara Russell collection. He is employing both sequins and beads and the results will be stunning, I have no doubt. I will post pictures of the finished piece just as soon as I have them. In the meanwhile, you may see the original canvas here. (And did I mention that Robert is an awfully nice guy? So please don’t be intimidated about signing up and learning a new technique!)

Cherry Festival & Ukiyo-e Canvas

< Instructors: Stephen & Hollie
Cost: $495
Dates: TBA
This class is in a bit of flux at the moment so you will have to “stay tuned”. I’ve tried contacting the Philadelphia Museum of Art to arrange for the class to visit and see one of the class projects which is a Ukiyo-e print that is in the collection of the PMA but not currently on display. So far, I have not had much luck in getting through to them but I shall continue to try. As for the Cherry Festival well – that is all very much dependent upon the weather. The prediction is for a mild winter which would indicate an earlier than average Cherry Blossom time (perhaps late March?). However, we all know how reliable weather predications can be. As for the canvases themselves -- well, I haven’t even had a chance to look at them, let alone do any stitching on them. So, bear with me. At this point, the class is really more of an idea than anything else but we will make it happen and if you are interested contact Russell so that you are sure to get the final information when it is available. PS -- The second canvas is a wonderful fan with a cherry blossom motif that has just arrived from the painters (see above)

Dates: 4/24 - 4/25
“Sonata” by Debbie Rowley is based on analogous color schema (colors that are next to each other on the color wheel). Participants will have a choice between a warm (red/orange/yellow) or cool (blue/purple/green) color scheme. There is also a neutral color scheme for those who prefer monochromatic designs. The design consists of lots of Jean Hilton type stitches, playing with different textures and colors. “Sonata” is 8in. x 8in. on 18 ct. canvas, 144 x 144 stitches. Debbie is an excellent teacher as she prepares thoroughly and employs multimedia. Her stitch guides are absolutely meticulous and she is extremely patient.

"Double Crossed" with Debbie Rowley

Instructor: Debbie Rowley
Cost: $495
Dates: 4/26 - 4/27
"Double Crossed" with Debbie Rowley of DebBee's Designs features multiple colorways. Students may choose from pink, green or blue with ecru. Emphasis will be developing a natural stitching rhythm and getting out of the diagrams, to enjoy stitching more and overcoming common mistakes. Prework strongly recommended! Threads include DMC pearl cottons and cotton flosses, Rainbow Gallery Neon Rays and Silk Lame’ Braid, and Kreinik metallics. If you have never done a counted canvas piece I would encourage you to try one. They are quite challenging and a nice break from painted canvas work.

Kelly Clark's "Celebration Birdhouses"

Instructor: Kelly Clark
Cost: $995
Dates: 6/13 - 6/15
Kelly Clark is a great designer and a talented stitcher and someone that we need to do more with at Rittenhouse Needlepoint. So, we are hoping to introduce her to our customer in June with a big welcome party, a trunk show and a class to boot. So, come join the party and let’s get to know Kelly Clark. Kelly has selected for us a McKenzie-Childs’ inspired design that features stumpwork. She is recognized nationally as an expert in three-dimensional needlepoint (aka “stumpwork”) and I have been wanting to take a class with her on the subject for a while. So, since I can’t tear myself away from this place long enough to do so, I simply decided to bring her here! So, come, join me and we will learn Stumpwork, Kelly’s passion, from the master herself.

Historic Philadelphia

Instructors: Stephen & Hollie
Cost: $495
Dates: 6/19 - 6/20
This short two-day seminar features one of my favorite Rittenhouse Needlepoint designs. Painted by our very first painter, Jim Boyle, the piece is titled "Philadelphia – Old and New" and it features buildings and scenes from around the city. We will combine this with a walking tour of historic Philadelphia, lunch at City Tavern and architectural stitches. Should be a busy and fun-filled two days in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection.

"Blue Ridge Reflections" with Kurdy Biggs

Instructor: Kurdy Biggs
Cost: $795
Dates: 7/10 - 7/13
Kurdy Biggs will b’ in da house. I love Kurdy Biggs’ stitches. She is the new Jean Hilton. I am telling you. She has you twistin’ and turnin’ every which a way. It’s crazy! But fun, fun, fun. “Blue Ridge Reflections” is a particularly lovely piece. Relatively subdued colors – pinks, blues, maroon, blue-green. A circular design. Plenty of challenges. But also repetition so time to reflect as well (you like that? How I worked the title of the piece into my description. Pretty slick, huh?) Anyhow, this three-day project will be good for all you Kurdy-ites out there or for those of you who have been hankering to give Kurdy class a whirl.

~

"Mediterranean Jewel" with Kurdy Biggs

Instructor: Kurdy Biggs
Cost: $240
Dates: 7/14
“Mediterranean Jewel” is a one-day counted canvas class with Kurdy Biggs. This class is a great opportunity for individuals who have not given counted canvas work a try before to check it out. Kurdy is a great teacher, super-fun and very welcoming. The project is manageable in size and will make a beautiful ornament for your home. Of course, if you are a more seasoned counted canvas person what not to love about a day of canvas work & Kurdy Biggs?

"American Folk Sampler" with Susan Hoekstra

Instructor: Susan Hoekstra
Cost: $295
Dates: 10/27
Susan Hoekstra is an ANG-certified Senior Master Teacher. Her “American Folk Sampler” employs various motifs (tulips, dove, house, etc.) to create a sampler with a specific meaning. The center text box allows the above and below motifs to help carry the indicated meaning. The motifs can be shifted to accommodate many occasions. The border flows entirely around the design to facilitate eye movement. Quiet areas of unstitched canvas allow for a visual resting place. The Smyrna Cross corners tie the piece together. This advanced intermediate design measures approximately 8in x 14in. There is pre-stitching with this design.

"Butterfly in the Garden" with Susan Hoekstra

Instructor: Susan Hoekstra
Cost: $895
Dates: 10/24 - 10/26
Susan Hoekstra is an ANG-certified Senior Master Teacher. The butterfly in ‘A Butterfly in the Garden’ is perched in the middle of a raised flower garden - deciding where to go to next. The Goldwork Butterfly is stitched separately and later attached to the center of the design. Many specialty stitches are utilized in this piece to give the stitcher a broader experience while creating a lovely raised-bed flower garden. Each flower bed is a distinctly different ornamental, or compound, stitch. The walkways are there as a means of getting from one side of the garden to the other. Beads have been added to four of the sections to add variety and decoration. There is much compensation to be understood; consequently, a good understanding of compensation is required. The raised flower bed will appeal to a wide variety of stitchers allowing them the opportunity to experience different advanced stitches along with the ability to move areas and colors around within the design to change it to their satisfaction. Advanced Intermediate.
